5 weeks pregnant What to Expect When You’re Expecting

Congratulations Mama’s! If you’re like me, you just found out you are pregnant! This is such a monumental time for us. Whether this is your first baby, or FOURTH like me, this is an exciting and, possibly, somewhat difficult time. So, Now What? Welcome to What to Expect When Your Expecting, 5 weeks pregnant!

  • What’s going on with your body?
  • What’s going on with your growing baby?
  • What should you be doing?
  • What should you NOT be doing?

Every pregnancy is going to feel and be different. My first pregnancy was a breeze. I was never sick, I worked at a very physical job and was able to keep working for most of my pregnancy, and I didn’t have any complications or weird cravings.

However!!! 5 weeks into this pregnancy and I feel like I’m dying. Just writing this post is taking every once of energy I have. I’m extremely nauseous, food sounds terrible, my body is aching from head to toe, and I’ve already had to use a sick day at my job.

What’s happening to our bodies at 5 weeks pregnant?

  • Disclosure! I’m not a nurse or doctor. I have no medical training. I’m sharing my personal experiences and what those experiences have taught me. If you’re doctor tells you to do something different, then listen to your doctor.

So, even though you are only 5 weeks pregnant, you may have felt your belly pooching out a bit. This is not due to your baby’s size. This is your body preparing to host your baby for the next 35 weeks. You have fluids rushing to your uterus, your body is making more blood, and HORMONES ARE SPIKING. All of this is going to swell your belly and make you feel a bit bloated.

Symptoms at 5 weeks Pregnant

  • sore breast
  • Getting more hungry, But not wanting to eat
  • nausea
  • some foods will start to taste different
  • going to the bathroom more
  • cramps (similar to your period cramps)
  • Hair growing in thicker ( I have Alopecia, so I really notice this)

What’s going on with your baby at 5 weeks pregnant?

Your little baby has begun to grow and is the size of an apple-seed. A whole 0.13 inches, and in the next week, baby is going to double in size! So, what does baby have?

  • baby is the shape of a stubby seahorse (without the pointy nose)
  • There is a shadow of an eye starting to form.
  • No limbs yet, just a little cashew

What you need to do when 5 weeks pregnant!

Alright Mama! If you’re not already doing this, it’s time to take care of yourself. You have another life relying entirely on you. This means you MUST take care of yourself!!! You need to take your vitamins and eat as well as you can. I say, “as well as you can,” because at this point in your pregnancy, you might not be feeling good and eating anything might start getting difficult. So, if you’re feeling good, COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS, and eat as well as you can. This means…

  • Eat whole foods
    • Fresh and cooked vegetables
    • Proteins, like fresh meat that is cooked well, nuts, and seeds
    • If you’re really sick, just accept the victory of being able to eat anything and keep it down. Sometimes we can’t be picky.
    • *** nausea tip*** try getting your calories through liquids. This will help you stay hydrated and better nourished.
  • Drink plenty of water
    • This will also help prevent your body from retaining too much water later on- Swelling
  • Take your Prenatal Vitamins
  • Iron
    • Your body is making more blood to provide for you baby. So, having low Iron is very common. I prefer a liquid iron, usually found in a whole foods store. This time I’m taking Spring Valley Iron 27mg because it was convenient to buy with my prenatal vitamin.
  • B6
    • I was told to try B6 for my nausea. I’ve only been taking the Spring Valley B6 brand for the last two days. I can’t tell if it’s helping yet. I’m still really sick and looking forward to meeting with my OBGYN to get a prescription that might help. (Edit for update:} B6 seems to have help me feel less boated, but I needed something stronger for my nausea.
  • Zofram
    • After the B6 wasn’t enough for my nausea, my OBGYN recommended Zofram. I took this for a week. It helped with the nausea, but gave me aches a pains, so as soon as I didn’t need it anymore I stopped taking it. By 7 Weeks, I was only taking my vitamins, Irom, and occasional B6.
  • Ginger
    • If you are feeling really nauseous, you can also try ginger. I have been making ginger tea for the last two days to attempt to sooth my stomach. I will update you and let you know if this helps. I peel and chop the ginger, and add it to hot water with some honey. (edit for update:) This helped me get a few little calories in and soothed my tummy a little, but I needed something more for nausea.
  • Exercise
    • If you’re already active, try to stay active by doing the things you are already doing, but be cautious with any heavy lifting, and ask your Doctor about specific exercises, if you are working out pretty intensely.
    • If you’re too sick to exercise, don’t panic. Focus on getting proper rest and nutrition. If your nausea passes you can introduce safe prenatal exercises. (blog coming soon)

What you shouldn’t do when 5 weeks pregnant!

Lastly, there are a few things you should NOT do while pregnant. Please remember, I am not a doctor, so if you doctor tells you differently, please listen to them over me.

Here are a few things you should avoid now that your pregnant

  • High sodium foods
    • Eating high sodium foods can make you retain a lot more water while pregnant and cause swelling. It can also cause more serious health issues. If you crave sodium, do your best to partake in moderation.
  • Lots of sugars and carbs
    • Once again, eating high sugared foods can make you retain a lot more water while pregnant and can cause swelling. It can also cause more serious health issues. If you crave sugar, do your best to partake in moderation.
    • I do NOT count fruit sugars as something that should be avoided. They’re a natural sugar, and I’m all about that.
  • Smoking
    • Maybe I shouldn’t think this one is obvious, but I do. We have a lot of medical information regarding smoking while pregnant and the long-term health issues it can have on an unborn child. It can affect their development, and a lot of children have dental and lung issues if their Mamas smoked while they were pregnant with them.
  • Alcoholic drinks
    • This one is very similar to the smoking point. You should avoid alcoholic drinks while pregnant because it can seriously interfere with the development of your baby. especially your unborn child’s brain.
  • Soda
    • A lot of pregnant woman will find themselves craving carbonation while pregnant. This is the only time I like carbonated water. Soda has too much sugar. It’s very unhealthy, so if you do need that carbonation fix, give carbonated water a chance.
  • Fast/Fatty/greasy foods
    • Eating healthy fats are very important for your growing baby. Avoid the greasy, fast foods. This will prevent you from gaining an unhealthy amount of weight. Eat your avocados and almonds.
